Shreveport, Louisiana----Baseball opened their run in the Red River Athletic Conference tournament this morning on Friday, May 5, 2017, on the campus of LSU-Shreveport against the #5 seed University of the Southwest.

Bulldogs 3, Mustangs 2

JCC starter, Matt Burrows (JR/Manteca, CA) (5-2) | USW starter, Alex Goodman (7-3)

Southwest would get on the board first taking a 0-2 lead in the 1st inning of play on three hits and one JCC error. JCC would respond in the top half of the 2nd on an RBI single by Anthony Ortiz (SO/Bronx, NY) (2-for-3) to score Spencer Thomas (JR/Oakdale, CA) (3-for-4), trimming the lead 1-2.

As Matt Burrows would shut down the Mustangs offense, keeping USW off the scoreboard in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings, the Bulldogs would look to take the lead in the 5th.  The Bulldogs would tie the ball game up on an RBI single by DeAndre McGuire (SR/Houston, TX) (2-for-5), as Christopher White (FR/Sacramento, CA) would score on a play at the plate. McGuire would go on to score after a Ryan Emerald (SR/Jamestown, CA) (1-for-2) single to center to take a 3-2 lead.

Burrows would be great on the mound in game one for the Bulldogs, forcing the Mustangs into 1,2,3 innings in the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th innings consecutively, backed by stellar defensive plays by the JCC defense, highlighted by Tyler Ruiz (FR/Jasper, TX) and DeAndre McGuire.

Burrows would leave the game after 8.0 solid innings allowing two runs to score, one earned, while scattering 7 hits, striking out five and walking none.  Tyler Arnsberg (JR/Merced, CA) would look to secure the win for JCC in the 9th, as USW would threaten, loading the bases with 2 outs. In freak way to end a ball game, USW would hit a soft groundball to the left side that would deflect off a Mustang base runner to end play.
